West Elks AVA

West Elks AVA

The West Elks American Viticultural Area (AVA) spreads throughout Delta county on the Western Slope of Colorado. It boasts of some of the highest vineyards in North America and the wineries produce some of the best Colorado wine. This high mesa area in the Colorado Rockies may seem like an unlikely place to grow grapes and make wine, but warm days, cool nights and the ideal soil types found here produce some of the best wines in the state, and many unique wines that rival those of California.

Wine

West Elks AVA is noted for its production of white wines. Riesling and Gewurztraminer grow extremely well here as does pinot gris and chardonnay. The high elevation and low humidity coupled with cool nights help retain a high degree of acidity as the grapes ripen. This is a positive for all varieties grown in the region, but it makes for especially perfect Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

The red varieties are not to be missed either. Pinot noir has found a home on the mesa slopes as well. The unique climate found on the Western Slope has been especially kind to this variety. Outstanding merlots are also bottled here.

In addition to standard varieties, hybrid grape varieties are particularly suited for this extreme grape growing area. If you’re talking real vineyards producing real classic European vinifera varietals, Terror Creek’s vineyard with an elevation of 6,417 feet, is second to none. One has to take an 800-foot plunge down to the snowmelt-fed North Fork of the Gunnison River to get to the bottom of this valley. The high altitude challenges grape growers with a frost-free growing season of as little as 150 days but that’s what the West Elks AVA is all about. This area takes grape growing to the extreme.

Vacationers traveling to the West Elks American Viticultural Area will not only enjoy tasting some of the best wines that Colorado has to offer, but will also enjoy the spectacular mountain vistas offered at each of the wineries.

Events

The wineries host two signature events each year: North Fork Uncorked and the West Elks Wine Trail. North Fork Uncorked occurs in early June and centers around a tasting of new releases from each of the wineries. A fun-filled weekend featuring culinary events, wine and cider, music and barrel tastings celebrate the beginning of the summer season. New releases of limited-production wines will be available for tasting and purchase. Fun activities for everyone!

Alongside other area farmers, local winemakers handcraft limited quantity artisanal wines. Because grape-growing conditions in the mountains of Western Colorado are severe, production is extremely limited. Many wines offered throughout the valley are only available right at the tasting rooms and
sell out quickly.

Location

Just a stone’s throw from Grand Junction and Montrose, a beautiful drive over Kebler Pass from Crested Butte, or a foray over McClure Pass from Aspen, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, and Redstone, North Fork Uncorked offers a refreshing food-and-wine getaway with plenty of additional diversions to leave you relaxed, rejuvenated and ready for summer.
