The ever-popular Cherry Pit Spit contest is back at the center of Town Park. Sponsored by Honey Rock Landing Orchard, the contest will have three age divisions: ages 5-10, 11-15, and 16 and over. Prizes will be offered based on age group.

Contestants can sign up at the Cherry Days Booth at the Paonia Town Park, registration closes 15 minutes before the contest and entries will not be taken once the contest has begun. Entry fees will also be based on age group. Contestants in the 11-15 age group, and 16 and over age group will get three cherries to eat. Contestants in the 5-10 age group will get 2 cherries to eat. Each participant will eat each cherry one at a time, and then spit the pit as far as they can. Judges will record the best of three (or best of two for the 5-10 year-olds) for each participant.

The contest:

  1. Each contestant will get 3 cherries (ages 5-10 will get 2 cherries each).
  2. Each cherry will be eaten one at a time, saving the pit of course. No hands can be used once a cherry goes into the mouth.
  3. Each pit will then be spit for distance or accuracy…or both!
The distance winner is determined by the greatest distance a pit is spit and the height of the contestant. The accuracy winner is determined by a pit landing in a target.

The contest will have three age divisions:

  • 5-10 year old division
    • Entry fee is $2  * Winner receives $25 * The event begins at 1PM
  • 11-14 year old division
    • Entry fee is $5 * Winner receives $35 * The event begins at 1:30 PM
  • 15+ division
    • Entry fee is $7 * Winner receives $50 * The event begins after the 11-14 division, approximately at 2PM
There will be additional prize money awarded for accuracy! This will be announced at the contest.
Contestants can sign up at the Cherry Days Booth at the east end of Paonia Town Park. Registration closes 15 minutes before each contest and entries will not be taken once the contest has begun. You will be competing with contestants from all over the country. So once cherries are available, you better “Get your Spit on”!
